ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT

Earth Systems has expertise in the environmental impact assessment of proposed and existing operations in the resource development and waste management fields. This expertise includes the management and preparation of environmental impact assessments to meet regulatory requirements for project permitting.

The approach of Earth Systems is to work closely with clients and project engineers during the prefeasibility and feasibility stages of project development to ensure that environmental considerations are fully integrated into project design. The aim is to develop management and mitigation measures that are technically and economically feasible, and that minimise environmental impacts to a degree acceptable to regulators, financiers, the community and other stakeholders.

The Sepon Project is located close to the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Lao PDR, in an area extensively bombed during the Vietnam War. This hut has been constructed using discarded bomb casing as supports.

Services Provided:
• Identifying and scoping environmental issues.
• Building an impact assessment team of in-house and external consultants with expertise specific to the nature of the project and its environmental setting.
• Developing, costing and managing an impact assessment program.
• Preparing detailed briefs for environmental studies, including impact characterisation studies and baseline investigations.
• Critically reviewing technical and environmental studies.
• Liaising closely with client, project engineers and, where required, regulators, financiers, the community and other stakeholders.
• Developing appropriate environmental management and mitigation measures in conjunction with the client and project engineers.
• Preparing an environmental impact assessment report that conforms to the requirements of regulators and that integrates project design, environmental study findings and proposed management and mitigation measures.
• Third-party review of environmental impact assessment reports.

Experience:
• Earth Systems, in partnership with NSR Environmental Consultants Pty Ltd, is currently preparing an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the Sepon Project in Lao PDR. The proposed development will involve open pit mining and processing of separate gold and copper deposits.
• Earth Systems personnel have experience in preparing environmental impact assessments for mining, petroleum and waste management projects in arid, semi-arid and tropical climates, in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Angola and Ghana.
